The Belfast Free Library’s Friends of the Library will hold their annual book sale beginning on Wednesday, June 16 from 4-8 p.m.

Members of the Friends will receive a 10 percent discount on purchases Wednesday only. New members are welcome also. Single memberships are $15 and family memberships are $20. We will have books, new and not so new, videos, audio books, DVDs, CDs, etc. New this year will be a selection of “special books” — collectables, antique and higher-values books, which are priced accordingly. The sale continues Thursday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days, and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Founded in 1992, the purposes of the Friends are: to assist the library in developing and maintaining its services; to encourage the community to support the library through the gift of books, money, and volunteer services; and to promote the use of the library for the intellectual and cultural enrichment of life in the Belfast community.

The successful fundraising efforts that the Friends are responsible for include organizing and running the annual book sale, putting on the dessert card party, and hosting occasional piano concerts in the Gammans Room. The funds raised go towards purchasing new books, program materials, multimedia resources, and equipment for the library. Last year monies raised by these efforts went towards the library’s book budget and for a new, digital microfilm reader to view and scan newspaper articles from the Library’s newspaper collection, which dates back to 1820.

Donations to the sale are welcome. Call the library at 338-3884 ext.10 first, to check what items they accept for the sale.
