David L. Smith, 80, died June 7, 2010, at Waldo County General Hospital with his loving family by his side.

He was born April 1, 1930, in Martins Ferry, Ohio. David served our country for 15 years in the Air Force. He had many jobs during his working career, sometimes working three jobs at a time. Just prior to his retirement he worked for Hannaford’s Supermarket of Belfast in the deli, he was know to many customers as “Mr. Customer Service.”

David was an avid Red Sox fan, enjoyed following the Ohio State Buckeyes and watching television. In his earlier years David was a very good pool player and bowler; in his later years he enjoyed his daily walks and watching the birds at his bird feeder. His greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his beloved wife of 47 years, Patricia (Doran) Smith, prior to her death.

David is survived by five sons, David Smith of Searsport, Mike Smith and his wife, Cindy, of Jackson, Peter Smith of Searsport, Patrick Smith of Franklin and Mark Smith and his wife, Christie, of Bucksport, five grandchildren, Brittany Shute and her husband, Josh, Mark Smith, Autumn Smith, Andrea Smith and Garrett Smith; a great-granddaughter; Alivia Shute; a sister, Shirley Schemp, of Martins Ferry, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews and extended family on his wife’s side in England and Germany.

He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia; and a sister, Carolyn Zingo.

The family would like to thank the staffs of Waldo County General Hospital and the oncology department. Also, huge thanks to Waldo County Home Health and Hospice for their kind and compassionate care of David.

At David’s request there will be no services.
