Merritt G. “Gil” Gilmer, 90, formerly of Northport, N.Y., died June 14, 2010, at Waldo County General Hospital.

He was born in Greens Fork, Ind., Nov. 18, 1919, a son of John and Avis (Veal) Gilmer. Merritt served as a Navy lieutenant in World War II and, following the war, in the Naval Reserve. He was a teacher and school librarian, an avid reader, gardener, sports fan and environmentalist.

He was predeceased in 2008 by his wife of 51 years, Claramartha.

He is survived by four children, Debbie Gilmer of Orono, Diane and Dan Maurais of Livermore, John and Lisa Gilmer of York and Robert Gilmer and Rene Orduna of Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren, Amanda Maurais, Bryan Maurais and Allison Gilmer and a great-grandson, Nolan Painter.

Friends may call Thursday, June 17, from 1-3 p.m. at the Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave. Interment will follow at Grove Cemetery in Belfast.
