The Waldo County Little League playoffs are down to two teams, as Waldo and Winterport Blue have begun their battle in a best-of-three-game series for the league championship.

Game one was played Monday in Waldo, with the hosts scoring three runs in the first inning, a total that proved the difference in a 4-1 win over Winterport Blue.

Waldo needs one more victory to claim the league crown, while Winterport Blue will need to win two straight to capture the title.

The best-of-three series continues Wednesday, June 16 at 5:30 p.m. in Winterport. Game three, if necessary, will again be played in Waldo, with the date and time to be determined.

The top hitters for Waldo in game one Monday were Gage Corson (home run, single), Kyle Artkop (single, 2 stolen bases, run), Anthony Defeo (single, 2 stolen bases, run), Alex Canning (single, stolen base, run) and Emery Dinsmore (single).

Colby Trask (double, 2 singles, run, stolen base) had the only hits for Winterport Blue.

Defeo pitched 5 1/3 innings for Waldo, while Canning went the final 2/3 of an inning. The duo scattered six hits and walked one, while fanning a combined 13 batters. Trask, Culley Wilson and Tim Farrar each took the mound for Winterport Blue, allowing a combined three hits and one walk, while striking out 11.

Artkop reached on a single to start the top of the first inning for Waldo, scampered to second on a passed ball and a single by Defeo put runners on the corners with one out. Canning then plated Artkop with a single to put Waldo ahead 1-0.

Defeo later came in on a passed ball and an error allowed Canning to score to put the hosts up 3-0 after one inning. Corson added a solo home run in the third inning to extend the lead to four runs.

Trask doubled in the sixth inning and scored on an error for Winterport Blue, but Waldo pitching retired the last two batters of the game to seal the first game victory.
