With the Little League baseball and softball regular seasons winding to a close in recent days, many leagues in the area have been busy plucking the best of the best from their respective player pools to put together teams they feel have a shot at representing their district, state, or perhaps all of New England on the diamond.

District 2 encompasses Rockland, Camden-Rockport, Belfast/Northport/Swanville, Waldo County, Knox Suburban, Waldoboro and Lincoln County Little Leagues on both the baseball and softball fields and will all soon square off for the right to not only call themselves district champions, but to move on to compete in the state competition later this summer.

However this season, there will be a twist in the traditional format.

Instead of immediately jumping into their respective double-elimination tournaments, there will be a six-game regular season with most teams facing off against each other at least once in the coming weeks.

The top four teams in each division will then compete in a double-elimination tournament for the district championships.

The regular season will begin Friday, June 25 and run through Saturday, July 10, with the double-elimination tournament set to begin Sunday, July 11.

There are three different age groups for baseball: 9-10, 11 and 11-12. For softball there are two age groups: 9-10 and 11-12.
