The annual Maine Celtic Celebration will be held this year by the Belfast waterfront on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 16-18. The public is welcome, and most of the activities are free.

Events and activities will include: Live music with various groups, dancing in the open air, workshops and exhibitions, games and athletic events, food from various vendors and a Celtic 5K road race.

As defined on the Web site (mainecelticcelebration.com), the Maine Celtic Celebration is a family-oriented celebration of the rich Celtic heritage, culture and hospitality found along the coast of Maine.

“It gets more fun every year,” said Bob MacGregor, who helps organize the annual events. “There is always something for everyone to enjoy, even though some may come to watch rather than compete. That’s fine, but some will love the races and contests and games as well. All are invited to join us in any way,” MacGregor concluded.

Among the celebrated events at the Maine Celtic Celebration will be the New World Cheese Rolling Championship at 3:40 p.m. Saturday, July 17, at the Belfast Common. Competitors will race downhill to catch rolling wheels of cheese, and the ones who capture the cheese will win the entire wheel of (edible) cheese.

Anyone willing to compete must register on the day of the race before 2 p.m. at the information tent on the corner of Miller and Front streets in Belfast. The event is sponsored by State of Maine Cheese Company in Rockport, and according to MacGregor, the prize is “well worth all your efforts to catch the wheel!”
