The Stockton Springs Steeple Committee has been hard at work planning fundraising events for the rest of the summer and into the fall. Thanks to the support of the community, it has been able to raise more than $55,000. The fundraising effort is now more than halfway there, but there is still much work to be done.

This project has been, and continues to be, a community effort, as the return of the steeple is anticipated by sailors seeking this well-known landmark as they approach the harbor, by the summer visitors who appreciate the historic village churches in Maine’s small communities and by all of us who have lived, loved and worked in and around this community for generations. In the spirit of community unity, the committee asks all to support the upcoming events as has been done in the past.

The events are:

Saturday, July 31, from 8 a.m. to 2 pm. — Yard and food sale at the Walter Trundy baseball field. If you have anything yard-sale-appropriate to donate (no clothing), contact Frank or Mary Jane Costigan at 567-3205. Pickups can be arranged. They will gratefully receive donations of pies, fudge, homemade jams, jellies, pickles, rolls, whoopee pies, or other food items you could share to be brought to the ball field after 8 a.m. on sale day.

Friday, Aug. 6, at 7 p.m. — Piano recital by Janet Spaulding, followed by butterfly slide show by Pat Snyder, at the community building next to the church. A $3 donation is recommended.

Friday, Aug. 20, at 6:30 p.m. — Silent Auction. A “Then and Now” slide show will be presented at 7 p.m. by a representative of the Penobscot Marine Museum. The committee is seeking donations of items for the auction. Contact Marion Fisher at 567-4040 if you have items to donate. Admission will be by donation of $3.

Saturday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. —- Food and bake sale at the Town Office parking lot. Donations of all kinds of food items will be gratefully accepted for this event as well.

Friday, Oct. 1, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. — Chowder supper at the community house next to the church. Cost is $6 for adults, $3 children under 10. Mark your calendars for all these events to ensure another successful year and a substantial boost in the steeple fund thermometer.
