The Midcoast Babe Ruth League baseball playoffs got underway July 5 with what was supposed to be a full slate of games, with many teams moving on to the semifinal round Tuesday, July 6.

What was to be four games July 5 quickly dwindled to two, with two squads moving on to the next round following forfeit victories.

In the South Division, No. 5 Georges Valley (8-7) doubled up No. 4 Waldoboro (7-8) 14-7, while No. 2 Wiscasset (10-5) also earned a forfeit victory over No. 7 Boothbay (1-10). No. 3 Newcastle (9-6) also pulled out a 10-9 victory over No. 6 Union (3-12).

Therefore, on Tuesday, July 6, No. 5 Georges Valley plays at top-seeded Damariscotta (13-1), while No. 3 Newcastle plays at No. 2 Wiscasset (10-5), both at 5:30 p.m. in semifinal clashes.

The winners of Tuesday’s contests will square off Thursday, July 8 in the Southern Division championship on the highest remaining seed’s home field. The winner of that game will advance to face the North Division champion in the Midcoast Babe Ruth League final on Saturday, July 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Marge Jones Recreation Facility in Rockport.

In the North Division’s first round July 5, No. 5 Searsport (4-11) earned a forfeit win over No. 4 Rockland (4-9). Searsport plays at top-seeded Rockport (9-5) Tuesday, July 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Marge Jones Facility. The same day at 3 p.m., No. 3 Camden (7-5) plays at No. 2 Belfast (9-5) in the other semifinal game.

The winner of the two semifinals will square off in the North Division championship on Thursday, July 8 at 5:30 p.m. on the highest remaining seed’s home field. The winner of that game will advance to the Midcoast Babe Ruth League final on Saturday, July 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the Marge Jones Recreation Facility in Rockport.

Playoff results

At Waldoboro July 5, No. 5 Georges Valley jumped to an early lead and scored in every frame as it pulled away from No. 4 Waldoboro and advanced to the semifinals with a 14-7 victory.

Seth Batty tossed a complete game for Georges Valley, allowing nine hits and four walks, while striking out five batters. Ryan Ripley worked three innings for Waldoboro, allowing eight hits and four walks, while striking out two. Tim Falla, Brandon Soper and John Murray allowed a combined five hits and six walks, while striking out three in relief of Ripley.

Philip Atwood (3 singles, 2 runs, 3 stolen bases, RBI), Caleb Jacob (single, run, stolen base), Dylan Maloney (single, triple, run, 2 RBIs), Batty (triple, double, 3 runs, 3 RBIs, stolen base), Drew Townsend (double, single, 3 runs, RBI, 2 stolen bases), Ben Oakes-Boynton (single, 2 RBIs), Nick Judge (single, RBI, run) and Jimmy Strong (single, run) led Georges Valley at the plate.

For Waldoboro, Shane Osier (double, RBI), Brandon Soper (single, triple, 3 runs, stolen base), John Murray (double, single, run, 3 RBIs), Tim Falla (single, RBI), Logan Robitalle (single, run), Chris Gove (single, stolen base) and Micah Williamson (double, run, 2 RBIs) led the offense.

At Newcastle July 5, Union rallied from a four-run deficit to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, only to see the hosts push across the winning run in the bottom of the frame as Union was eliminated from the playoffs 10-9.

Top hitters for Union were Clarence Porter (single, run), Mike Kee (home run, single, 3 runs), Alex Greenrose (2 home runs, 3 runs), Isaac Greenrose (home run, single, 2 runs) and Ryan Quintal (single).

For Newcastle, Dalton Leeman (3 singles, double, 3 runs) and Brandon Bonney (2 singles, 2 runs) led the offense.

Isaac Greenrose pitched 4 2/3 innings for Union, allowing nine hits and six walks, while striking out 10. Alex Greenrose pitched the rest of the way in relief, giving up two hits and five walks (two intentional), while striking out three.

Bonney tossed a complete game for Newcastle, scattering eight hits and four walks, while fanning 13.
