While the majority of the District 2 Babe Ruth baseball tournaments have been double-elimination, the format for the 14-year-old championships were no different, with one exception — there were only two teams.

With Midcoast North and Midcoast South the only squads in the age bracket, the District 2 Babe Ruth 14-year-old tourney essentially became a best-of-three series, which kicked off the morning of July 17 and culminated that afternoon at Wiscasset High School.

Two games were slated for Saturday, with a third winner-take-championship set for Sunday, July 18, if necessary.

However, Midcoast North shot down any plans of that happening.

Midcoast North scored 24 runs Saturday and failed to allow Midcoast South to get into any kind of rhythm as the North cruised to a pair of victories, crowing it District 2 champions and earning a spot in the upcoming state tournament.

Midcoast North earned a 13-1 victory in game one and kept it rolling in game two, upending Midcoast South 11-1 in five innings.

Midcoast North advances to the state tournament, which begins Wednesday, July 21 at 5 p.m. at the Field of Dreams in Harrison. Midcoast North will take on Tri-County South in the first game of the double-elimination tournament, which will conclude Saturday, July 24 with the state finals.

The winner of the state championship advances to the New England Regional Tournament, which will take place Aug. 6-11 in Westfield, Mass.
