After weeks of showcasing its talent on Midcoast diamonds, the Belfast-Northport-Swanville Little League 9- and 10-year-old baseball team finished the District 2 tournament unbeaten and with a coveted berth in the upcoming state tournament under its belt.

Belfast capped its unbeaten tourney with a hard-fought 7-6 win over Waldo County July 18 on Walsh Field in Belfast. Belfast finished 3-0 in the double-elimination tourney and 9-0 overall. Waldo County finished 2-2 in the double-elimination portion and 5-5 overall.

The double-elimination state tournament will be played Thursday through Tuesday, July 22-27 in Hermon. Belfast, as the District 2 champ, will play the District 5-District 6 winner on Friday, July 23 at 2:30 p.m. to start the tourney.

The BNS all stars, which outscored opponents 116-26 in nine District 2 tourney games, include Zach Dyer, Ricky Smith, Alex Newcomb, Stan Sturgis, Garrett Hamlin, Tyler Bartlett, Rudi Schnetzer, Skylar Perkins, Andrew Akles, Konnor Hartford, Nicholas LaRochelle, Nathaniel Johnson and Dean Grass. The team is managed by Larry Dyer and coached by Mike Dyer and Jason Perkins.

The Waldo County all stars include Colby Furrow, Liam Cail, Joey Danna, Sam Goguen, Brandon Reynolds, Devon Davis, Kenney Brewer-Frazee, Derrick Tyler, Josh Larrabee, Logan Curtis, Cole Frey, Eric Gower and Connor Kneeland. The team is managed by Monica Furrow and coached by Wally Furrow and Mark Goguen.

Belfast’s previous results in the double-elimination portion of the tourney were: Belfast 11, Waldo County 1; and Belfast 28, Knox Suburban 4.

Belfast’s scores from the regular season or round-robin portion of the tourney were: Belfast 4, Camden-Rockport 2; Belfast 20, Lincoln County 0; Belfast 14, Knox Suburban 4; Belfast 13, Rockland 3; Belfast 15, Waldoboro 6; and Belfast 4, Waldo County 0.

In Sunday night’s championship game, Perkins and Sturgis pitched for Belfast and allowed six hits and eight walks, with seven strikeouts. Brewer-Frazee, Reynolds, Furrow and Kneeland threw for Waldo. Combined, the foursome allowed six hits, nine walks, hit a batter and recorded a strikeout.

For Belfast, Sturgis (single), Perkins (triple, run), Hamlin (single, run), Dyer (single), Bartlett (run), Johnson (2 singles, 3 runs) and Smith (2 runs) were keys offensively.

Dana (triple), Tyler (triple), Brewer-Frazee (single, run), Frey (run), Larrabee (single, run), Davis (run), Reynolds (run) and Goguen (single, triple, run) contributed for Waldo.

After two innings, Waldo County held a 3-1 edge. However, Belfast responded in the third with five runs to take a 6-3 advantage. Waldo County came back in the fifth stanza with three runs to tie the game 6-6.

That set the stage for the dramatic ending to the game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Belfast found that break as Hartford walked, eventually moved to third and pinch runner Smith crossed the plate with the game-winning run.
