Rattling off two wins and earning a berth in the District 2 Babe Ruth 13-year-old baseball final, things were looking up for Midcoast North as it needed just one more win to advance to the state tournament.

However Brunswick, which advanced to the championship round via the loser’s bracket, had other plans.

After Midcoast North earned an initial 7-4 win over Brunswick to advance to the district title game, Brunswick fought its way to the championship round for another shot at the team that sent it to the loser’s bracket July 17. Brunswick made the most of that opportunity as it won back-to-back games over Midcoast North over a three-day span and were crowned District 2 champions.

Brunswick won in a 13-8 slugfest July 18 to force a second, winner-take-all championship game July 20 at Mount Ararat Middle School in Topsham. In the final game, Brunswick snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning and added a much-needed insurance run in the sixth to clinch the District 2 title with a 3-1 victory.

Graffam pitched for Midcoast North, allowing seven hits and one walk, while striking out five on the hill. Deveroux, Cam Berry and Wild combined to allow six hits and one walk, while striking out six.

Brunswick got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning after Deveroux rapped a two-out hit, stole second base and scored on an RBI-single by Casey. However, Midcoast North rallied to draw even in the fourth after Schecter singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a ground out by Sean Pierce. Graffam then singled in Schecter to knot the score 1-1.

Midcoast North fell behind by one run after a throwing error allowed Brunswick’s Myles Silverman to score from third. Silverman also scored a pivotal insurance run in the sixth on an RBI-single from Lowell.
