Two gardens on Condon Street were featured in the Belfast Garden Club’s Open Gardens series July 23. The gardens of Cathy Cole, at 30 Condon, and Jean Durham, at 31 Condon, each make distinctive use of features — a lamppost, a garden swing, a birdbath — to give the eye a sense of order and set off their flowers.

Durham’s garden is well-established after 18 years and features a birdbath garden and feeders, as well as beds of sun- and shade-loving perennials.

The Cole garden, begun just two years ago in an overgrown yard, boasts attractive rock walls bordering its flowerbeds, a shady garden swing and an unusual wrought-iron gate, along with a variety of perennials.

The Open Garden series continues from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays through Sept. 10. Tickets may be purchased at each garden on the day of the tour for a donation of $4 for one garden or $15 for a five-visit ticket. Proceeds from the tours benefit the garden club’s civic beautification projects.
