Despite wet weather conditions, a record 82 hardy athletes and six teams competed in the fifth annual Hope Sprint Triathlon July 24 at Hobbs Pond and, when the hard work was over, Hope and Northport residents proved the fastest male and female individuals in an event that raised money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Adam Scott, 41, of Hope finished the triathlon course, which included a quarter-mile swim, a 13-mile bike and 3.1-mile run, including a grueling ride up the tough Barnestown Road hill, first overall in one hour, seven minutes and nine seconds. His time was a record for a local participant. Ed McDevitt of Boulder, Colo. holds the overall course record with a time of 1:05:32 in 2008.

Scott outdistanced runner-up Scott Layton, 34, of Rockport, who finished in 1:08:18, by a little more than a minute.

Beth Anderson, 36, of Northport was the first female finisher, crossing the course in 1:17:34. She was 10th overall. Anderson outdistanced Maureen Scott, 40, of Hope, who was the second female in 1:18:25 and 13th overall.

Anderson, one of the co-directors (with Jim Wescott) of the Waldo County YMCA’s Family Triathlon Festival in the spring, said finishing first for women in Hope held a special satisfaction because she competed in the event to honor her mom.

The Scotts made a bid to be the first husband-and-wife winners of a local triathlon (that combination has happened in local 5K road races).

Brian O’Neil, one of the three organizers of the triathlon and owner of the Hatchet Mountain Publick House in Hope, said the event “will have pushed us beyond the ‘wish granting’ level of $6,000, but that total includes other events that occurred over the last year. This year’s triathlon will net about $2,500,” he said.

Andrew Stewart, the owner of Hope General Store, Maureen Scott and O’Neil organize the triathlon each year.

O’Neil said next year’s financial beneficiary from the triathlon will be to “fight hunger in the Midcdoast.”
