Hilda S. Greene, 89, died Aug. 4, 2010, at a Skowhegan health-care facility following a long period of declining health.

She was born April 1, 1921, in Waldo, a daughter of Emery and Charlotte (Braley) Sprague.

She was a graduate of Crosby High School in Belfast. Her first husband, William Linton, was killed in active service in World War II. In 1946 she married Willard Gordon. They had a son, Kenneth. Willard died in 1966. In 1971 she married G. Burton Greene, who died in 1982.

Hilda moved to Skowhegan following her marriage to Willard. For many years Hilda was employed as a beautician. She was very active in a number of civic organizations and especially liked the extension. She was a member of the Skowhegan Federated Church and the Mayflower Society.

She loved to play cards and had a keen interest in bridge, golf, and swimming. She was a very sociable person and mixed easily with a wide variety of persons. She had a remarkable memory for birthdays, anniversaries and holiday events. She sent cards and notes to many folks.

She took great pleasure in decorating her home for the holidays or family occasions, always being a gracious hostess. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was predeceased by two sisters, Norma Rogers and Suzanne Thompson; and two brothers, Malcolm Sprague and J. Douglas Sprague.

She is survived by a son, Kenneth Gordon, and his wife, Susan; a grandson, Ross Gordon; two sisters, Barbara Hinckley and Elizabeth Paden; and two brothers, Roger, Hayden and Bruce Sprague.

Viewing hours will be held Tuesday Aug. 10, from 5-7 p.m. at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A memorial service will be held Wednesday Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mark Tanner officiating. Burial will follow at the Southside Cemetery in Skowhegan.
