Come Boating!’s two Cornish pilot gigs, Belle Fast and Selkie, participated in the annual Gloucester, Mass. Maritime Heritage Race for gigs, dories and traditional rowing craft Aug. 7 in Gloucester Bay.

Repeating its winning performance from the March 6 Snow Row in Hingham, Mass., Selkie took first place in its class. Belle Fast finished third, less than two minutes behind Selkie.

The two Come Boating! mixed crews of men and women raced six gigs and a whaleboat on a four-mile course under sunny skies with a slight sea running. The course started on Niles beach, went out to the breakwater, back across Gloucester Bay, around Ten Pound Island, back again to the breakwater and finished at the Niles beach starting point.

“The race started off very fast with the Selkie immediately leaping into a narrow lead, leaving the Belle Fast and the Buzzards Bay Gail Force to battle it out for the second place. During the race the Selkie gradually increased its lead to secure first place, and the Gail Force prevailed over the Belle Fast to take second place,” said Belfast coxswain Malcolm Gater.

The winning time for Selkie was 40 minutes and 38 seconds, with Belle Fast finishing in 42 minutes and 37 seconds.

Members of the winning crew in Selkie were Chris Gordon, coxswain, and rowers Wesley Reddick, Martha Garfield, Greg Stafford, Jonathan Fulford, Roy Rodgers and Jim Bahoosh.

Belle Fast was rowed by Linda Hurley, Rafe Blood, Monica Piccini, Tyler Yentes, Ellen Sinclair, and Esther Martin from Gloucester, with Gater as coxswain.

After the race the competitors and helpers enjoyed lunch and award presentations at the Heritage Centre in Gloucester.

Come Boating! will host gigs from Gloucester, Buzzards Bay, and other rowing organizations at its 10th annual rowing regatta on Saturday, Aug. 21 in Belfast Harbor. Come Boating! also encourages other rowing and paddling craft to compete in other regatta classes. Registration and race information is posted online at
