Maine State Special Olympics held their fifth annual Tennis for Fun Invitational Aug. 17 at the Midcoast Recreation Center. The competition consisted of seven individual tennis skills covering all of the strokes in the sport.

Three athletes from the Belfast Tennis for Fun program competed. Sabrina Nixon won a gold medal, Brandi Place earned a silver medal and Mary Drinkwater secured a bronze.

The Belfast athletes are coached by Bridget LaCivita and Judy Moore. “Tennis for Fun” is a free clinic for special needs athletes. The clinic is held at the Belfast City Park on Fridays from 3 to 4 p.m.

The goals of the program are to give athletes the opportunity to have fun playing tennis, learn basic skills, train for the Special Olympics and socialize, said Moore.
