For Mount View field hockey coach Gloria Hewett, the Aug. 24 Coastal Field Hockey Play Day Championships could not have gone better.

Not only did her Mustangs roll over the competition en route to their second straight title in the preseason tournament hosted by Camden Hills and Belfast, but they did so on the veteran coach’s birthday.

“I told them it’d be really nice for us to bring it home,” said Hewett of the championship trophy. “It’d be the best present I could have had today.”

Mount View amassed 54 points in the daylong, round robin-style event en route to its second straight title, while Belfast finished second with 37, giving the always strong Waldo County duo the top spots. Rockland/Georges Valley finished third with 16 points, while host Camden Hills finished fourth with 13.

After being awarded the championship trophy, members of the Mustang team sang “Happy Birthday” to their coach.

“Singing to me was maybe a little bit over the top,” said Hewett with a laugh. “But they really are great kids. That was fun.”

The annual event, which typically showcases six local varsity field hockey teams, all preparing for their regular seasons, this year had only four, with Lincoln Academy of Newcastle withdrawing late after not being able to bring together enough players to field a team. The other team that traditionally plays but did not this year was Georges Valley, which consolidated with Rockland.

In a pinch, Camden Hills inserted its junior varsity club as the fifth team, though games the younger Windjammers played did not factor into the play day’s scoring.

Each team received five points for scoring a goal toward the overall daily total and one point each for shots on goal. Each varsity team played three games against varsity opponents, while each game was 25 minutes.

Results from the games were: Belfast 14 (2 goals, 4 shots), Camden Hills 4 (4 shots); Mount View 26 (3 goals, 11 shots), Rockland/Georges Valley 0; Mount View 15 (2 goals, 5 shots), Camden Hills 0; Belfast 20 (3 goals, 5 shots), Rockland 13 (goal, 8 shots); Camden Hills 9 (9 shots), Rockland 3 (3 shots); and Mount View 13 (goal, 8 shots), Belfast 3 (3 shots).
