A man who formerly served as the town’s fire chief and ambulance director was arrested Aug. 26 and charged with a sex crime that allegedly occurred four years ago and reportedly involved a teenage girl.

Terry Cook Jr., 36, of Searsport, was arrested and charged with gross sexual assault, a Class B felony, by the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest followed an investigation by Detective Merl Reed.

Lt. Jason Trundy said the case involves a girl who was 14 years old when the crime ocurred, and that offenses allegedly took place on several occasions in 2006.

Cook resigned his posts as Searsport’s fire chief and ambulance director in October 2007, saying it was “time for a change” and that he felt “a little burned out.” He had served as the town’s ambulance director since May of 2002 and as fire chief since January of 2005.

At the time of Cook’s resignation, Searsport Town Manager James Gillway said Cook “resigned on his own accord.” Gillway said Cook been involved with the public safety jobs for a number of years — Cook, by his own account, first joined Searsport’s fire and ambulance departments in 1998 — and that Cook wanted to “find something different to do.”

Cook is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in Waldo County Superior Court on Thursday, Oct. 28.
