Harris James Pratt, 80, formerly of Belfast, died Aug. 24, 2010, at Grady General Hospital. Private services will be held at a later time.

Harris was born Oct. 28, 1929, in South Windham, a son of Ruby Chambers and Alexander Thomas Pratt, the third of four children. The sea became a way of life for him at a very early age and so began his shaping — with challenge, strength, honesty and truth. It could truly be said that the path to becoming a merchant marine was his mantra, and he became as one with the sea.

For more than 50 years he was a devoted husband to Alice M. Duclos, who predeceased him.

He is survived by six children: Kenneth James Pratt and his wife, Georgia, and son, Aaron; Priscilla Anne Pratt; Eugene Hugh Pratt and his wife, Denise Harrington Pratt; Kathleen Rose Pratt and her partner, Maynard Merrill; Dorothy Eva Pratt; and Paul Edward Pratt and his wife, Debra Roy. In this very last chapter of his life, Rashel Ellsmore lovingly cared for him and shared his blessings.

While others struggle with just being every day, Harris James, at sea, in silence, under the stars, looked up and heard the voice of God. Then — steadfast; now — evermore.
