The Northport Golf Club presented gifts to Belfast Area High School golfers who, when the Friday, Aug. 27 ceremony was finished, were left holding the bag. Or, more accurately, 10 bags.

Jerry Savitz, Northport GC president, presented 10 golf club bags to Lion coach Chip Lagerbom at the club in a ceremony at noon. BAHS plays its home matches at the Northport GC.

“It’s part of our effort to keep youth interested in golf and to support the local golf programs,” said Phil Bowen, the club’s past president and active member.

The blue bags with the BAHS logo and a Lion will be property of the school so this year’s golfers — and future athletes from the school — can use them.

The club also funds a scholarship for young golfers and free youth clinics during the summer.

“This is all part of the same package,” Bowen said. He added that the club funds the youth programs through a winter auction and dinner. “We are very supportive of junior golf and [the bags are] just a manifestation of that.”
