With temperatures near 90 degrees, a warm breeze sweeping across the course, skies darkening and the threat of Hurricane Earl looming, many of the Midcoast’s high school cross-country runners competed in a season-opening meet Friday afternoon at Winslow High School.

While the host Black Raider squads ruled the day, local runners were among the top finishers, including in the girls race, which was won by Belfast’s Abbie Wessels. In fact, in the girls race, four of the top five finishers were Midcoast student-athletes.

The girls team scores were: Winslow 46, Medomak Valley 60, Camden Hills 71, Erskine Academy of South China 87, Belfast 89, Gardiner, Mount View, Rockland and Skowhegan, no score.
