On a sunny Monday afternoon in Belfast, Waterville came ready for action and, while the Purple Panthers kept the Lions on their paws, in the end, the visitors could not prevent the hosts from securing a 1-0 season-opening win.

The game originally was scheduled for Sept. 4, but was moved due to concerns over Hurricane Earl.

Monday’s makeup contest marked the 399th career victory for 38-year Belfast coach Allen Holmes. During his tenure, Holmes has guided the Lions to six state Class B championships and 11 Eastern Class B titles.

Holmes and the Lions will try for the milestone victory on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. when BAHS plays at Winslow.

To win Monday’s game, Kari Osgood assisted Helene Wallace’s goal with 16:40 remaining in the first half.

Belfast’s Paxton Mohney made two saves on four shots in the cage. Waterville’s Sadie Dixon had seven saves on Belfast’s 15 shots.

Belfast held a 7-2 edge in penalty corners.

The Lion and Purple Panther jayvee squads played to a 1-1 tie.
