Maine trail races will take place Sunday, Sept. 19 at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester to raise money to provide educational opportunities for children who have lost their parents and families.

Reade Brower of Camden said he and others are looking to form a Midcoast team of runners to participate in either the half-marathon or 5-kilometer trail races held that day.

The races begin at 8 a.m and 8:30 a.m., across from the market on Farm View Street and wind through the fields and woods. The races are to raise funds to pay the secondary school fees for orphaned students in the rural Machinga District of Malawi, through the non-profit Friends of Little Field Home.

In Malawi there are an estimated one million orphans and all secondary schools are costly and usually more than most families make in one year.

To become a member of the Midcoast team, contact Brower by e-mail at reade@freepressonline.com or call him at 691-3510.

The races are to raise funds to give orphans a future and a chance to attend school, Brower said. Individuals can run in the 5K or half-marathon by registering online at mainerun.com or at littlefieldhome.org or on the day of the race from 6 to 7:30 a.m.
