Police say a moose that was spotted near Searsport District High School Thursday has not been seen since school staff reported the sighting at noon, but the public is still being urged to use caution when driving through town.

Searsport Police Chief Dick LaHaye said the moose sauntered through the schoolyard, where students and staff caught a glimpse of the animal for a few minutes before it reportedly headed toward town.

Sergeant Steve Saucier patrolled the downtown area in search of the moose, but was unable to make contact with the four-legged subject.

LaHaye said police did not know if the moose was male or female, but a photo captured by someone at the school shows an animal of considerable size that appears to be sporting a set of antlers.

Although the moose had not been seen in the area as of 4 p.m. Thursday, LaHaye advised residents to be mindful of its potential presence.

“Be aware that it is around, and don’t go near it,” he said.
