Medomak Valley High School’s annual homecoming cross-country meet Friday afternoon included a distinct Midcoast flavor as Knox, Waldo and Lincoln county schools were represented. Added to the mixture were a sprinkling of Kennebec and Androscoggin county teams.

In the end, local runners and teams realized plenty of success and one coach reached an impressive, eye-opening career milestone.

Medomak Valley coach George Gould surpassed 1,000 career high school varsity athletic wins in his 27 years coaching at the school. Those wins came as coach of girls varsity basketball, girls cross country (including a state Class B title in 1989), boys cross country and girls and boys track and field.

Gould has coached 55 Panther varsity teams 1983 to 2010, including girls cross country 1986 to 2010, boys cross country 2006 to 2010, girls basketball 1983 to 1993, boys track and field in 1986 and girls track and field 1987 to 93, 1999 and 2006 to 2010.
