The Belfast Bicycle Club’s first annual Point Lookout Hill Climb brought high-intensity bike racing to the flanks of Ducktrap Mountain Sept. 19. The race ascended 450 vertical feet and the distance was a little less than a mile.

The race featured two heats. The first was a time trial, in which racers rode the course alone, at 30-second intervals, racing against the clock.

The top eight racers returned to the bottom of the mountain for a second heat, a mass-start race. Morgan Laidlaw of Camden cleaned up in both races. Judy Ottman of Belfast was the fastest female racer. And Nathan LaBrecque of Newport, at age 16, was the youngest competitor.

The men’s results were: 1, Laidlaw, 4:54 (course record, with average speed of 11.02 mph): 2, Bill O’Brien, 5:34; 3, Didier Bonner-Ganter, 5:39; 4, Murray Carpenter, 5:43; 5, Dana Jenner, 5:46; 7, Labrecque, 6:15; and 8, Chris Gardner, 7:23.

The women’s result was: 1, Judy Ottman, 7:30.
