A 21-year-old man who had warrants out for his arrest for forgery and theft was arrested Tuesday, Sept. 28, after police received a tip from the public.

Officers with the Belfast Police Department arrested Benjamin Rankin of Belfast after the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office issued a call for the public’s help with locating Rankin Monday, Sept. 27. Rankin was out on bail on a charge of robbery in Hancock County, and he is also wanted on arrest warrants in Waldo County for forgery, theft by deception and violation of conditions of release, all of which were alleged to have taken place in Belfast. Rankin is also wanted on arrest warrants in Hancock County for burglary, theft and violations of conditions of release.

Rankin was arrested after a citizen spotted his photograph through media reports stating police were searching for him. The citizen contacted the Waldo County Regional Communications Center and advised the Belfast Police Department that Rankin was staying in an apartment on Seaside Drive in Belfast. Police arrested Rankin at the apartment about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, and Rankin was transported to the Waldo County Jail.
