A pair of Waldo County high school football squads took part in two lopsided contests over the weekend, with only one of the two coming out on the winning end.

Belfast dominated host Nokomis of Newport in the second half of Saturday’s 40-13 victory in a Pine Tree Conference Class B showdown, while Mount View of Thorndike was not as fortunate, dropping a 48-8 decision to Calais/Woodland in a Little Ten Conference Class C battle the same day.

Belfast 40, Nokomis 13 … At Newport, the Lions and Warriors looked to be entrenched in quite a battle through the first 24 minutes of play, with Belfast clinging to a 14-13 lead at intermission. However, the visitors took charge in the second half, outscoring the Warriors 26-0 en route to a convincing victory.

Brad Reed threw for 151 yards and three touchdowns to lead Belfast (2-3) and also rushed for another score in the win. Dylan Webster scored on a pair of touchdown runs, while Lani Eversage both ran for and caught a score for the visitors. Ben Chapman also found the endzone in the win, as did Ben Knowlton. Austin Chapman and Dan Tucker scored both touchdowns for Nokomis.

Webster rushed for 130 yards on 14 carries, while Eversage had 108 yards on 14 carries and a 124 yards on four catches for Belfast. Tucker and Drew Wing each had eight rushes for 54 yards for Nokomis. Belfast outgained Nokomis 440-184 on offense and led 22-7 in first downs.

Webster scored on a seven-yard scamper to kick off the scoring to put Belfast up 6-0, while Dan Tucker came back for the Warriors and found the end zone to tie things up. While Nokomis took a brief lead after the extra point put the hosts out in front 7-6, Reed found Eversage on a 61-yard TD strike. After Webster rushed in the two-point conversion, Belfast led 14-7.

The Warriors cut it to 14-13 after Chapman scored from seven yards out, but Belfast scored 26 straight points in the second half on a one-yard TD rush by Reed, a 20-yard TD reception from Knowlton, a 45-yard touchdown run by Webster and a 19-yard touchdown catch by Eversage. Webster and Greg Clark also scored two-point conversions in Belfast’s high-scoring second half.

Calais/Woodland 48, Mount View 8 … At Thorndike, the visiting Silverados jumped to a large first-quarter lead and never looked back as they pulled away early from the host Mustangs (1-4).

Aaron Santana connected with Will Nunn on a 64-yard touchdown reception for Mount View’s lone score, while Ryan Cavanaugh ran wild for Calais/Woodland, racking up 213 on 25 carries and four touchdowns. Spencer McCormick and Scott Carpenter also scored two touchdowns apiece for the Silverados.
