The Searsport golf team took its nearly pristine regular-season record to Jato Highlands Golf Course Sept. 30 to compete with 23 other teams across two classes for the right to call itself champions of the Penobscot Valley Conference.

The Vikings played well, but not well enough to bring home the league title as they took home fifth-place honors in Class C. Searsport’s top four golfers combined to shoot 369 through 18 holes, 56 shots more than Houlton, which took home the PVC Class C title.

Presque Isle (334) brought home the PVC championship in Class B. Twenty-three teams between the two classes vied for their respective conference crowns.

The individual results for Searsport golfers were: Allen Connor 88, Tim French and Alex Carroll 93, Rocky Faunce 95 and Jacob Allenwood 99.

The Vikings finished the regular season with an 8-1 record, but failed to qualify for the state Class C team championships Saturday, Oct. 9 or have any golfers qualify for the state individual championships on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Houlton (313), George Stevens Academy of Blue Hill (356) and Penobscot Valley (361) all qualified in Class C, while Presque Isle (334), Ellsworth (342), Foxcroft Academy (347) and Mattanawcook Academy (352) each will move on in Class B.

The Vikings still claimed the Class C PVC Southern Division championship despite coming up short with their bid for the postseason, which is fine with coach Steve Tupper

“I was extremely pleased this year with the effort and all the sportsmanship that the kids showed throughout the year,” he said. “I was very proud of them.
