Virginia (Shute) Costigan, 76, died peacefully at home Oct. 3, 2010, with family by her side.

She was born in 1933 to Owen and Netina Shute. She graduated from Stockton Springs High School.

She is fondly remembered for her love of reading and avid interest in sports, sometimes watching three TVs at the same time. Her life revolved around her family; she especially enjoyed her visits with her great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Russell and her husband, Rusty; two grandsons Daniel and Nathaniel Cady; two nieces, Lynn (Costigan) Shaw and Faith Russell; and a dear friend, Rebecca Costigan.

She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Joseph Costigan; six children and their spouses, Michael and Christine Costigan, Loretta and Kevin Kenney, Susette Costigan and Timothy Cady, Jody and Debbie Costigan, Craig and Laura Costigan, and Roxanne Costigan; a sister Mary Jane, and her husband, Frank Costigan; a brother, Melvin, and his wife, Janice Shute; 21 wonderful grandchildren, Michelle and Craig, Boyd and Loren, Suzanne and Adam, Shawn and Danielle, Cynthia, Steven, Sarah, Patience and Brett, Jasie and Allen, Mark, Olivia, Joseph, Thomas, Nicole and Matthew; 10 adored great-grandchildren, Cameron, Caleb, Luke, Lucia, Addison, Trenton, Bryant, Sydney, Nathaniel, Cutler; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and her oldest friend, Mertie (Colcord) Dieterick.

Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of her life Saturday, Oct. 9, at 1 p.m., at the Stockton Springs Community House.
