One Midcoast high school golf team was expected to be there and did not disappoint, while another was a young upstart trying to make late-season noise.

Both did just that as Belfast and Rockland competed in the state Class B team championships Saturday amid cold, windy and wet weather conditions at the Natanis Golf Course.

When the final shots were made, the Lions had finished sixth and the Tigers 10th among the 12 qualifying squads.

Falmouth ran away from the field with an impressive four-golfer, 18-hole stroke total of 315. Belfast finished 358 (sixth) and Rockland at 372 (10th).

The individual scores for the Lions were: Jamie Jackson 75, Stephen SImmons 85, Tyler McDevitt 95, Jordan Luther 103 and Tim Sticht 105.

The individual scores for the Tigers were: Reilly Flanagan 88, Cameron Clement 92, Connor Clement 94, Jordan Carter 98 and Parker Spear 102.

BAHS coach Charles Lagerbom said he was pleased his squad bested half the state field, including Waterville and Rockland from the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B division.

“Jamie Jackson had a great round despite very windy, cold conditions,” the coach said. “It was good experience for our younger players and hopefully will instill in them a desire to return next year and do even better.”

Rockland coach Keenan Flanagan echoed those sentiments. He said after a regular season in which the Tigers had only four wins and finished fifth in their division. the squad put it all together in the Oct. 5 state qualifier against 350 golfers and 15 teams.

He said it was a bonus to get the opportunity to play in the state tournament. He said the youngsters were nervous and felt the pressure of the bigger stage Saturday, but gained valuable experience for the future.

Eight local golfers will participate in the season’s final high school event when seven will compete in the state schoolboy individual championships and one will participate in the state schoolgirl championships, both on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. at Natanis.

Those local state qualifiers are: Belfast’s Jackson and Simmons; Rockland’s Cameron Clement and Reilly Flanagan; Medomak Valley’s Zach Judkins; Camden Hills’ John Vannorsdall; Mount View’s Erik Larrabee; and Georges Valley’s Leah White.
