A local man was arrested on two counts of domestic violence assault Tuesday, Oct. 19, after the victim changed the story she told police about how she received her injuries.

Kevin S. Gibbs, 29, of Belfast was arrested on the assault charges, and he was also charged with possession of a usable amount of marijuana Tuesday morning, according to arrest records at the Belfast Police Department.

Detective Sgt. Bryan Cunningham said Gibbs’ arrest came after a woman appeared at Waldo County General Hospital Monday, Oct. 18. The woman told medical personnel that she had been assaulted while she and a friend were walking down Northport Avenue. The woman stated that a man had tried to steal her purse, and when he couldn’t get her purse, the alleged assailant punched her in the face and knocked her out.

Cunningham said the woman stopped at her nearby residence to get cleaned up before she headed to the hospital.

On Tuesday, while police were doing a followup, the woman told the officers that it was Gibbs who had assaulted her the day before.

Gibbs was arrested and transported to the Waldo County Jail. Gibbs is scheduled to appear at Fifth District Court in Belfast Tuesday, Nov. 2.
