Residents craving a choice of national chain pharmacies need wait no longer. The new Walgreens on Belmont Avenue in Belfast has opened for business, two doors down from competitor Rite Aid.

City officials and representatives of local businesses and organizations came out for the ceremonial ribbon-cutting on grand opening day, Friday, Oct. 22.

By 10 a.m. the parking lot of the new 14,000-square-foot store was full. Inside, Walgreens staff, in blue jackets, helped customers get the lay of the store. Visitors were treated to coffee and slices of a giant white-frosted cake emblazoned with a red Walgreens logo.

The festivities were helped along by Shrine Club “Funsters” dressed as Mickey Mouse and Sesame Street characters Cookie Monster and Bert, who waved to passing cars on Starrett Drive.
