If anyone has an American flag that’s seen better days, the local VFW can help dispose of the old star-spangled banner properly.
The Randall Collins VFW post at 34 Field St. has scheduled a flag retirement event Sunday, Nov. 7, at 2 p.m.
Worn out flags may be dropped off at the VFW post or at Weaver’s Bakery on Main Street.
According to the national VFW Web site, there is a process that should be followed when retiring a worn out American flag. Some tips offered on the site include:
• The flag should be folded in its customary manner;
• It is important that the fire be fairly large and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag;
• Place the flag on the fire;
• The individual(s) can come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection;
• After the flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried, and;
• Make sure to follow local and state fire codes or ordinances.
For more information about the flag retirement, call the VFW at 338-2358.
