Vaughan E. Howard died peacefully Oct. 31, 2010. He was attended in his final days by his sons, Rick Howard and his wife Jackie, Lenny Howard and his wife, Julie, and Chad Howard and his wife, Melissa; his daughters, Nancy Dakin and Amanda Doucette and her husband, Douglas; his grandchildren, Scott Howard, Amber Stanhope, Crystal Richards, Brian Doucette, Melissa Hebert, Justin Howard, Jessica Howard, Michael Doucette, Cassandra Howard and Noah Howard; 10 great-grandchildren; and especially his wife, Norma Howard, who never left his side through his final week. They just recently celebrated their 60th anniversary.

Vaughan was born at his family home in Searsport on Feb. 5, 1931, to Raymond M. Howard and Florence (Benson) Howard. He worked a variety of jobs, including as a mechanic at Grant’s Garage in Searsport, City Bus Company in Bangor, the Northern Chemical Industries in Searsport and Knox Brothers Esso in Searsport, and as a carpenter for Robert Kenney Builders. He started his own company, Vaughan Howard and Son Custom Builders, in the mid-1960s and continued to work for himself until his retirement some 20 years ago. After retirement, Vaughan enjoyed restoring, or as he called it “resuscitating,” antique cars, and finding appropriate new owners for the vehicles. His friends and family will remember him as a world-class “putterer,” with great mechanical ability and curiosity, and always a project of some kind in the works.

Vaughan was a former member of the Odd Fellows and a volunteer firefighter with the Searsport Fire Department. He served two terms as selectman and was a member of the planning board for the town of Searsport. He was a former member of the Searsport Methodist Church and current member of the Belfast United Methodist Church where he was an active participant in the Men’s Spiritual Group. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a hard worker and an endless source of love and support to friends and family.

Vaughan was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Winifred (MacKenzie) Casey, Ella Rogers, Fern Krienke and Nellie Howard; and his brother, Linwood “Doc” Howard.

In addition to his wife and children he is survived by his sisters, Eudora Perkins and her husband, Merle Perkins, of Hampden and Jeanette Clark and her husband, Pete Clark, of Searsport.

A service celebrating his life will be held Sunday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at the Belfast United Methodist Church, 23 Mill Lane in Belfast. The Rev. Jinwoo Chun will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, Vaughan’s family suggests memorial donations made to the Belfast Methodist Church Chair Fund, 23 Mill Lane, Belfast, ME 04915; or the Searsport Fire and Ambulance, 1 Union Street, Searsport, ME 04974.

Arrangements are with the Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 9 Mountain St. in Camden.
