The Belfast Area High School field hockey program recently honored a handful of players following the teams fall season, said veteran coach Allen Holmes.

For the Lion varsity, Kasey Laveway was most valuable; Sasha Small, most improved; and Rosie LaCivita, won the coach’s award.

The following awards also include the sponsors: Madison Cummings, 12th player award, Belfast McDonald’s; Helene Wallace, outstanding defense, Belmont Self-Storage; Lauren Martin, hustle award, Lee Woodard Law Office; and Brooklyn Curry, determination award, Belfast Variety.

The senior goalie award went to Paxton Mohney, who finished with a 7-3-2 record, five goals allowed (.416 goals-against average), with seven shutouts and 36 saves on 41 shots (.880 save percentage).

The Lions’ leading scorers were Ashland Hall, with five goals and six assists, and Lauren Rice, with five goals and three assists.

Laveway, LaCivita, Wallace, Martin, Hall and Small were members of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B all-academic team, for seniors who achieve a 90-or-higher grade-point average during high school.

This fall, Belfast finished 7-4-3 overall, including falling to No. 3 Nokomis of Newport 2-1 in double-overtime in the Eastern Class B quarterfinals. The Warriors went on to win the state Class B crown.

Also noteworthy is the fact coach Holmes finished the season with more than 400 career wins. His record now stands at 405-149-38 in nearly four decades of guiding the Lions.

The junior varsity Lions award winners were: Hopeful Merchant, most improved; Kelsey Grass, coach’s award; and Savana Wood, outstanding contribution.
