Oakland Park Bowling Lanes bustled with activity Monday morning. Conversations among bowlers, along with cheers of support, applause for a job well done and laughter filled the building, interrupted only by the smack of balls knocking down candle pins.

That was the scene as the annual Special Olympics bowling event took center stage with participants of all ages and physical abilities hoping to send the pins flying. And that happened often — especially for one youngster.

After rushing to the line and letting out an excited battle cry of sorts, Emma Arndt of Rockland District High School sent her ball down the lane, clearing out all 10 pins. Cheers and applause arose from the seats behind her.

Not all of the day’s participants were able to get to the line unassisted, but all were there to be with friends, family members, caregivers, volunteers and teachers to have a good time and create lasting memories.

The individual scores for the participants, who represented schools in Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties, including the bowler’s age and pins knocked down, were:
