Susan L. Kohls-Bartlett, 53, died unexpectedly, Thursday, Nov. 18, 2010, after a brief illness, at Florida Heartland Hospital, Sebring, Fla.

Born in Camden, April 21, 1957, she was a daughter of Preston A. and Carolyne (Payson) Perkins.

Growing up in Rockland, Susan attended local schools and was a 1975 graduate of Rockland District High School.

Following her marriage to Wayne Young, she moved with him in association with his military career to Minot, N.D.

She later returned with her sons to Rockland, and in 1980 moved to Matinicus, where she married Richard Kohls. While living on Matinicus, her third child, Evan, was born. Always a hard and diligent worker, Susan devoted herself to the care of her three rambunctious boys, and busied herself baking, gardening and doing the billing for the Matinicus Power Company, as well as serving on the Matinicus School Board. She also worked at the post office and the general store.

Returning to Rockland in 1997, she married Richard M. Bartlett. Together the couple renovated and decorated their Limerock Street home, which was always open to friends and family. Richard died in 2005.

For many years, Susan worked for Phil Johnson of The Offshore Restaurant in Rockport, where she became friends with hundreds of locals, who thought the world of her. Although she worked in a variety of jobs, waitressing was her favorite. She loved the interaction with people and had a big, open heart, which gave her the talent to listen and care for so many of her customers.

Susan’s greatest passion was her children and grandchildren. She loved to garden and had great success brightening her home with flowers. She had a knack for baking and often created many smiles with her cookies, cakes and pies.

Susan was greatly loved by her family, who were at her side when she died.

Other than her husband, Susan was predeceased by her father in 1999.

She is survived by her mother; three sons, Jeremy Young, Michael Young and his wife, Elizabeth, all of Rockland, and Evan Kohls of South Portland; her former husband, Richard Kohls, of Matinicus; her five grandchildren, Kimberly, David, Autumn, Abby, and Ashley Young; four sisters, Kathy Morton and her husband, Lonnie, of Vinalhaven, Jeanette LaVerdiere of Brooks, Julie Bemis and her husband, Mark, of Matinicus, and Lori Feener of Belfast; her paternal grandmother, Barbara Perkins, of Rockland; her mother-in-law, Maria Bartlett, of Rockland; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St, Rockland. A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, at Littlefield Memorial Baptist Church, 1 Waldo Ave., Rockland. Private interment will be in Coughlin Memorial Cemetery, Rockland.
