After a successful season, the U13 Pen Bay Boys Soccer Club lost in the State Challenge Cup finals Nov. 6 at Windham High School.

The team reached the semifinals after winning its group the previous weekend in South Portland. In a game that Pen Bay had to win the locals beat the Portland Area Youth Soccer Association team 3-2, with goals for Pen Bay coming from Josh Pitcairn, Kienan Brown and Willie Cole.

In the semifinal game, Pen Bay defeated Falmouth 2–1. Pen Bay took the lead in the first half after Andrew King was fouled in the box. Pitcairn scored with a shot into the bottom right corner from the penalty spot.

In the second half, Falmouth was awarded a penalty shot for a handball and tied the game 1-1. Pen Bay regained the lead after a scramble at the net. There, Nick Czhucra’s shot rebounded off the post and Alex Forcillo tapped the ball into the net.

Falmouth continued to put pressure on and was awarded a penalty shot. However, a save from Eli Smith prevented the equalizer and Pen Bay held on for a victory and a trip to the final.

In the final, Pen Bay played the undefeated Hampden Broncos who looked to win their third straight final. Pen Bay came out of the gate and found itself trailing 2-0 after six minutes.

Soon after, “the players settled their nerves and began playing like they had all season,” said Pen Bay coach Dwight Pitcairn. Brown, who was strong in the front, scored on a breakaway just as halftime was approaching to give Pen Bay a lifeline.

Pen Bay’s confidence grew in the second half and, with 15 minutes left, Brown slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net for the tie.

Hampden responded with the game-winning shot from outside the penalty area with less than two minutes to go.

“Although Pen Bay pushed for the equalizer there was just not enough time,” coach Pitcairn said.

Pen Bay finished the season with 13 wins, a tie, and three loses, as well as winning the Harvest Cup in York on Columbus Day weekend. The team was a mixture of players from Hope, Camden, Rockport, Lincolnville and Thomaston.

The U13 Pen Bay Soccer Club team consisted of Eli Smith, Alex Forcillo, Kyle Crans, Sean Albertson, Jack Gallagher, Tristan Fong, Austen Gallant, Adam Hamilton, Josh Pitcairn, Nick Czhucra, Andrew King, Willie Cole, Lucas Berstein, David Flint, Jet Magri, Nick Tassoni, Kienan Brown and coaches Dwight Pitcairn, Mike King and Bill Flint.
