Registrations are open for the 21st annual U.S. Toboggan National Championships, which will be contested Friday through Saturday, Feb. 11-13 at the Camden Snow Bowl.

More than 1,000 costumed participants, more than 400 handmade wooden toboggans and a 400-foot ice chute that allows participants to fly across frozen Hosmer Pond combine to make this a wacky event, fun-filled weekend.

The event has drawn participants from all over the world for the past 20 years.

“Imagine over 1,000 adrenaline junkies screaming down a frozen ice chute at 40 miles an hour. It’s a tradition, it is great fun and it’s an incredible rush,” said Dan Bookham, executive director of the Camden-Rockland-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce.

The entry fee is $60 for the two-person division, $90 for the three-person division and $120 for the four-person division. The experimental cost is $100. There are limited entries and class sizes. There is even a “design your own toboggan” category. The registrations deadline is Friday, Jan. 28.

“The Midcoast really comes alive in the winter. For the Toboggan weekend, we are planning on fireworks in the harbor, great entertainment, activities for all ages and affordable lodging packages,” Bookham said.
