Two BAHS students will be traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C. on July 15 to take part in the NCAA National AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) 15-and-under girls’ basketball tournament.

Jamie Flagg and Jillian Ross, both of Belfast, will be competing for the Maine Blizzards, a traveling team comprised of young women from Winslow, Camden-Rockport, Rockland and Belfast. The Blizzards are coached by Tom and Susan Philbrick of Owls Head and Sue Carleton of Rockland.

The Blizzards won March’s YBOA (Youth Basketball of America) State Championship tournament, and were runners-up in the state AAU tournament in April. The Blizzards’ finishes in both tournaments made them eligible to compete in the respective national tournaments.

The team has held several fundraisers, including car washes and a lobster raffle going on now. Tickets for the raffle are $5, and five winners will receive 20 pounds of new shell lobster. The team will be fundraising and selling tickets at the Maine Blues Festival, held July 10-11 in Rockland. The five winners will be drawn at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 11.

For information on the Blizzards, or to purchase raffle tickets, contact Sue Carleton, 594-4721. Tickets can also be obtained from any member of the Blizzards’ roster.
