The best offensive statistic in baseball is when a batter hits a grand slam, which is belting a home run with the bases loaded.
Well, Dylan Thompson, 17, of Knox accomplished the equivalent of that as a hunter by bagging a moose, bear, turkey and deer in the same year.
Thompson, with help from his family, accomplished the grand slam hunting in Waldo and Aroostook counties.
Thompson’s turkey, which weighed 18 pounds with an 8-3/4-inch beard and 5/8-inch spurs, was taken in Waldo County this season.
He followed that by bagging a 230-pound bear Sept. 7 and then a 867-pound moose, which had a 46 1/2-inch spread, with 25 points, on Oct. 12. Both animals were taken in Aroostook County.
The teenager finished his remarkable hunting year with a 170-pound, 6-point buck Nov. 27, also hunting in Aroostook County, on the final day of the firearms season.
Of course, as successful a hunter as Thompson has proven, success in the great outdoors must run in the family because his younger sister, Megan, 12, also took a turkey and deer this season.
