WBYA, 105.5 Frank FM will broadcast local high school basketball for the first time beginning Tuesday, Dec. 14 when Rockland hosts Medomak Valley in a boys/girls doubleheader.

Veteran broadcaster Don Shields will lead the coverage and will be joined by Terry Spear and Chris Seavey for the 22-game regular-season schedule that will include high school games for Rockland, Medomak Valley, Camden Hills, Georges Valley, Belfast, Mount View and Wiscasset hoop squads.

The station also plans to broadcast selected games from the high school regional tournament in February.

Pat Collins, senior vice president and market manager for Nassau Broadcasting Maine, is excited about adding the game schedule to the classic rock station.

“People are passionate about high school basketball, and we’re pleased to bring these local broadcasts to the fans of Midcoast Maine,” Collins said. “We’re also excited that we will be streaming the games, so that fans and family members who live outside of our listening area can enjoy the games. Plus, we will be using equipment that will bring our listeners digital quality for every broadcast.”

Shields, who is also the voice of the University of Maine women’s basketball team, has been the voice of Midcoast high school sports since 1985, during which time he has called more than 1,200 high school games.

Spear has been covering basketball for nearly two decades in the Midcoast, Biddeford and Bath-Brunswick markets. Seavey, a former Rockland District High School athletic standout, has more than five years of on-air experience.
