In what is likely the final tune-ups for both teams prior to the start of the regular season, the Belfast and Mount Desert Island varsity and junior varsity boys basketball squads tipped off in exhibition contests Wednesday at Belfast Area High School.

The game resulted in a pair of victories for the Trojans, who will kick off the 2010-11 regular season on Saturday, Dec. 11 at Old Town. The Lions will begin their regular season at home Friday, Dec. 10 against Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

In Wednesday’s varsity contest, MDI pulled away in the second half en route to a 56-38 victory. The Trojans led 18-13, 28-23 and 42-27 at the quarter breaks.

Leading the Trojans were Caleb MacDonald with 14 points, while Ben Walls added 13; Ryan Lynde, 12; Nate Chisholm, nine; Duncan Smith and Nick Shaw, both three; and Sam Joy, two.

For the Lions, Brad Reed and Adam Heroux each netted 13 points, while Dylan Webster added five; Eric Mitchell, four; and Jamie Jackson, three.

The Lions were 4-of-7 (57 percent) from the charity stripe, while the Trojans were 8-of-13 (61 percent) from the line

In the junior varsity game, the Trojans posted a 59-34 win over the Lions. MDI led 24-15, 30-21 and 45-30 at the quarter breaks.

Micah Welch netted 12 points for MDI, while Colin Moores added nine; Chris Clemens, seven; Andrew Dalton and Trevor Alley, both six; Keegan McKim, Tyler Farnsworth, Garrett Lee and Isaac Wallace, all four; and Jon Phelps and Max Mason, both two.

For the Lions, Damion Benner scored 12 points, while Grant Richards added three and Mike McFadden, Garth Clements, Yanni Rakis, Kalen Benjamin, Greg Clark, Ryan Rice, Stephen Paul, Cody Beverage and Emerson Dellamatteo, all two.
