A Unity man was charged with operating under the influence and leaving the scene of a property damage accident in the early morning hours of Saturday, Dec. 11.

Albert Hubbard, 22, of Unity was summoned on both charges after police were notified about a hit-and-run accident that occurred in the parking lot of the Lookout Pub just after 1 a.m. Saturday morning.

Belfast Police Chief Jeff Trafton said Hubbard was leaving the establishment after spending the evening there when he allegedly backed into a parked vehicle on his way out of the parking lot.

“As he was leaving he backed into a vehicle and just drove off,” said Trafton.

Belfast Sgt. John Gibbs was in the area of the pub at the time the accident occurred, and Trafton said a bystander alerted the officer to the accident. The witness also identified Hubbard as the driver of the pickup truck that had struck the parked vehicle and left the scene.

Police caught up with Hubbard a short time later, and Trafton said Hubbard claimed he was unaware that he had hit anything.

“There was quite a bit of damage done to the car that he hit,” said Trafton. “… He broke the tail light on his truck.”

Hubbard is scheduled to appear at Fifth District Court in Belfast Tuesday, Feb. 8.
