Former Belfast Area High School wrestler Travis Spencer earned plenty of accolades during his time on the mats for the Lions. Now, Spencer, who is a sophomore at the University of Southern Maine, is grappling with even more success at the collegiate level.

Spencer recently was named New England Wrestling Association athlete of the week with his efforts on the mat in the 197-pound weight class. He defeated American International College via forfeit, downed Dillon Lawler of Roger Williams 11-1 and defeated Andrew Fraser of Bridgewater State 5-3. Spencer is 11-3 this season, with two pins.

Spencer was a four-time state champion at the 189-pound weight class for Belfast and holds the school’s all-time career record for victories.
