In a battle of Knox and Waldo county christian school basketball squads, visiting South Liberty downed South Hope Christian 59-53 Dec. 10. South Liberty led 14-7, 32-19 and 43-30 at the quarter breaks.

Burt Ludwig poured in 23 points and Ryan Turffs 16 to lead the Pioneers to a six-point victory over the Royals in Athletics for Christian Education League court action.

Ludwig proved hot shooting from the outset, scoring nine points in the first quarter to help the Pioneers double the Royals 14-7 at the end of the frame. Turffs stepped up to the plate in the second quarter to score nine points to increase the Pioneers’ lead to 32-19 at halftime. 

After halftime, the Royals returned to the court inspired and played the Pioneers even in the third stanza at 11 points apiece.

In the fourth quarter, the Royals came together as a team and made a run to win the game. Mike Kee scored nine points in the frame to power South Hope within six points of the Pioneers. However, the run fell short when Sam Wadsworth fouled out with 2:53 left and Kee fouled out shortly thereafter.

Scoring for the Royals were Wadsworth with 17 points, Kee 15, Nathan Young 11, David Mank six and Lonnie Adolpshen four.

Other scorers for the Pioneers were Ben Daggett with nine points, Joseph Curtis six and Elijah Curtis three.


In girls volleyball action, the Royals defeated the Pioneers in straight sets, 25-15 and 25-12. The victory was the 93rd straight for South Hope, dating back to the previous five years. The Royals have won five straight state championships.
