Daniel Raymond MacEwan, 86, of Thorndike passed away at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010.

He was born in Hackensack, N.J. to Archibald and Laura Traendley MacEwan. After graduating from Westwood High School in New Jersey, he served in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, Parachute Infantry during World War II. He was in the following campaigns: Battle of the Bulge, Central Europe, Naples, Rhineland and Rome.

In 1949 he married Dorothy Jean Jones of Spring Valley, N.Y. They had a loving marriage that lasted 61 years. While in New Jersey, he worked for Federal Electric and Western Electric. They were very happy to have adopted their two daughters, Cynthia and Genevieve, during this time.

They loved the state of Maine where they vacationed every year, so finally they decided to leave the hustle of the city and bought a poultry farm in Troy. Later he was employed by Ethan Allen as night watchman/boiler operator until his retirement.

Dan treasured the country life, enjoying gardening, fishing and horseshoes. He loved time with his two grandsons, Benjamin and Joshua Patrick. He also enjoyed playing poker with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; his daughters, Genevieve and her husband, Marshall Flanders, of Northport, and Cynthia and her husband, James Patrick, of Frankfort; and two grandsons.

Dan requested no public services. The family wishes to thank the staff of Waldo County Home Health Care and the Maine Veterans Home of Augusta for their care and comfort. Arrangements are by Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Avenue, Belfast. Online condolences may be offered at ripostafh.com.
