The Medomak Valley boys basketball team left little to chance Wednesday night taking on Belfast in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B contest as the host Panthers hoped to preserve their final victory of the year as 2010 winds to a close.

Mission accomplished.

The Panthers (3-3) pounced on the Lions (1-5) early and often in the game’s first 16 minutes and held the visitors to a single point in the second quarter as Medomak Valley cruised to a 72-25 victory over Belfast.

The hosts jumped to a 21-4 lead after the first quarter and put the game out of reach by halftime as the Panthers led 35-5. Medomak Valley then took a 54-16 lead after three quarters.

Isaac Greenrose paced the Panthers with 16 points, while Ryan Ripley added 12; John Murray, 10; Isaac Durkee and Alex Greenrose, both eight; Zack Judkins, seven; Jonathan Hendrickson-Belloguet, five; Shane Osier, four; and Brandon Soper, two.

For Belfast, Brad Reed and Adam Heroux each netted five points; Jamie Jackson and Dylan Webster, both four; Mike Perry and Tyler Prescott, both three; and Emerson Dellamattera, one.

The Panthers were 5-of-7 (71 percent) from the foul line, while the Lions were 6-of-14 (43 percent).

Medomak Valley rattled off the game’s first 10 points on a trey by Isaac Durkee, a jumper from the elbow by Alex Greenrose, a steal and finish by Isaac Greenrose and a trey from Isaac Durkee all in the first two minutes to set the tone early.

Heroux put up a shot off the backboard from the baseline followed by a runner from Jackson to cut the hosts’ lead to 10-4, but the Panthers then went on a 25-1 run to end the half, with a second-quarter free throw from Reed accounting for the lone Lion score.

In the first quarter, Isaac Durkee scored on an acrobatic layup with four minutes left, followed by a Murray hoop from close range and, after Isaac Durkee hit 1-of-2 from the line on a Belfast technical foul, the Panthers led 15-4.

Ripley then put up an offensive rebound for his first score, followed by a hoop from Alex Greenrose off a fastbreak and a field goal from Osier on a nifty move in the lane, accounting for the first-quarter score.

Belfast rattled off the first six points of the second half on hoops from Reed, Jackson and Webster, but Medomak Valley responded and went on a 19-5 run to continue the rout.

Medomak Valley (5.4012 points) is ninth in the latest installment of Maine Principals’ Association Heal Points for Eastern Class B, while Belfast (1.0802 points) is 17th. Ellsworth (6-0, 13.6728 points) is first in the 19-team region.
