With two recent solid victories, the Midcoast Ice Cats, a cooperative high school ice hockey squad, improved their record to 3-2 on the young season.

On Dec. 29 at the Kennebec Ice Arena, the Ice Cats defeated Cony of Augusta jayvees 9-2. The ‘Cats were powered by hat tricks from forward Yannick Price-Prevot and defenseman Cal Robbins, both of Medomak Valley.

Host Cony jumped to an early 1-0 lead. The Ice Cats managed to tally twice before the period was finished to take a 2-1 edge into the second period. Cony responded by tying the game again before the ‘Cats added two goals to grab a 4-2 advantage.

The third period saw the Ice Cats put the contest away with a five-goal outburst.

Parker Spear of Rockland played in goal for the ‘Cats. Goals scorers for the locals included Price-Prevot and Robbins, both with three goals; and Tyler Fogg and Jacob Perry of Rockland and A.J. Naum of Medomak Valley, all one.

On Dec. 30 at the Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport, the Ice Cats extended their win streak to three games with a 7-5 victory over the Maranacook-Hall-Dale-Winthrop Hawks. Maranacook is in Readfield and Hall-Dale in Farmingdale.

The Ice Cats continued their offensive surge in recent games with three goals and three assists from forward Price-Prevot. Goals by Price-Prevot and Kenny Scheimreif of Medomak Valley gave the ‘Cats a 2-1 lead after the first period.

The ‘Cats extended that lead to 5-3 after two periods when Price-Prevot and Perry assisted on each other’s scores. Tyler Hadyniak of Mount View scored his first goal of the season, assisted by Scheimreif (goal, assist).

Fogg assisted Price-Prevot’s third goal and again Perry (2 goals, assist) and Price-Prevot teamed for the final tally for the home team.

MHW managed two goals late in the contest to make the final score 7-5.

Spear stopped 17-of-22 shots between the pipes for the ‘Cats. MHW was 2-of-5 on the power play, while the ‘Cats converted their only power-play attempt and scored a short-handed goal.
